Cookie the Monster

If ever the statement: dynamite comes in small packages was ever true, it certainly was in the case of Cookie. Cookie was a black and tan Chihuahua. I think she thought she was a Doberman or a Rottweiler because she had the same coloring. She certainly acted like one.

I am sure she didn’t weigh more than 5 pounds but she was packed with lots of attitude. She certainly knew how to throw her weight around. And she was not afraid to let almost everyone but me know who the boss was no matter how big they were.

She belonged to my husband’s (then boyfriend) parents. We are not real sure where they got her. But they bought her when she was a puppy. She must have looked like a real sweet little puppy when they chose her.

She was a real terror to almost everyone she encountered. She didn’t like men very well that is for sure. For some unknown reason she took to me and became my protector whether I needed or wanted one. But she was always nice to me because I have always been the pack leader around dogs and she knew who the boss was.

She did not like to be left alone in the house and would get into mischief when she was. She was very creative in her mischief when they left her there alone and they never knew what they would find in the living room.

Even if they were at home with her she was not always good. She didn’t like the phone ringing and when it rang she would run and grab the edge of the table cloth on the kitchen table and pull it off onto the floor.

So most of the time there was nothing but the table cloth on the table and the salt and pepper shakers and the sugar bowl had to be brought out when they had a meal. If they were left on there they would end up on the floor. Not so bad for the salt and pepper but not good with the sugar bowl.

When they left her alone they always knew if they’d had a phone call because the table cloth would be on the floor. Sort of like early caller ID or someone leaving a message; except there was no message and they had to guess who might have called.

They told me that one time they had gone to the next town to the grocery store and were gone about 2 hours and were really surprised when they got home at what they found. Now I want you to picture this video in your mind of this little 5 pound dog doing what seems impossible.

Watch Cookie with her short 5 inch legs going down to the basement one step at a time. She is finally in the basement and is searching for something to get into. AHAA! She spies my future father in laws size 12 leather cowboy boots.

Now she has to figure out how to get them upstairs. Can you see her walking around them and wondering how to go about getting them up the stairs? Each boot is longer heel to toe than she is and probably weighs half of what she weighs. They are also at least twice as tall as she is.

So after much consideration she knocks them over on their side. Then she grabs one by the top and drags it across the floor. This is a monumental task for one so small but she keeps pulling.

Now she is at the bottom step, she looks up at the stairs and decides the best plan of attack is to get up on the step and grab the top of the boot which is almost as high as the step when laying on its side. She gives a tug and it pulls her off the step and she goes rolling over the boot and onto the floor.

This only makes her madder and she jumps back on the step again. She changes positions and gives another tug. The boot starts to move and before long she is backed into the corner of the step and the boot is laying on the step with her.

This process took about 5 minutes to accomplish but she had the process down now and she continued up each and every step to the landing where the stairs made a turn and there was one more step into the kitchen.

Now she had to get the boot into the living room and display it in the center of the floor like a trophy; which it was for her. Think about something in your house that is twice as tall and weighing almost as much as you do and then think about getting it up the stairs by yourself. She had earned her bragging rights.

But then she remembers that there is one more in the basement and she is still mad and not going to leave it down there. So the process is repeated one step at a time. With the normal 13 steps in a house and it taking about 5 minutes a step, the first boot took about an hour to get upstairs

The second boot went a little quicker because she had the process down pat now and when she emerged onto the landing and then the kitchen floor and then into living room, she had spent 45 minutes of the second hour they were gone.  Then she stretches out on the floor by the hallway door and goes to sleep.

When they got home there in the living room sat his two cowboy boots that had been stored in the basement and she is sleeping and looking every inch an angel.

I am sure they would have liked to be a fly on the wall that day to watch her struggle with those two boots to get them up the stairs.

Another time when they left her alone they came home and she had brought up 10 lbs of potatoes, probably one a time and deposited them all over the living room floor.

I think she favored my future mother in law when I was not around, but when I was there she was on my lap constantly. When we were having our time together she didn’t want anyone near me.

If my husband (then boyfriend) came near me or my future father in law she went ballistic. She would curl her upper lip and growl and if they got to close she would lunge at them and try to bite them.

If they pointed a finger at me from across the room she would lunge and show her teeth and snarl. They were not going to get close to me when she was on guard duty.

So Cookie the Monster earned the name of Monster the old fashioned way, she was very good at throwing her minimal weight around and being a bully.  To contact Sandy: [email protected]
