Here is a riddle for you! “What does a woman like to truly do the best?…especially one who really enjoys the pursuit of shopping and along with  making others happy? In case you didn’t guess it, here’s the theme of our Christian Women’s Club Luncheon on Wednesday, October 21…Pursuit of Happiness! Is there any woman who doesn’t like to shop or want to be happy?

All the ladies are invited to bring their favorite craft or article to the auction to be sold by a cowboy in a black hat (my hubby, John). He will banter his auctioneering with some humor while a woman with a red cowgirl hat (Me) and a couple other ladies will holler out when we see a hand go up. When you’re all through bidding, John will holler SOLD and we will go to the next item. It is amazing how much fun it is, especially when it’s for a good cause.

The cause, of course, is for the Stonecroft Ministries, a non-denominational, non-profit Christian organization providing global leadership in women’s ministry.

It’s mission is to “equip and encourage women to impact their communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” It was founded by Helen Duff Baugh in 1938 and is now headquartered in Kansas City, MO.

Many of their avenues of service is through ladies luncheons with a lady speaker telling about her life experience in accepting Christ and explaining it to the ladies in terms they can understand. There are Bible studies available to those who wish to attend. They also work with women incarcerated and those who are connected with the military.

The speaker at our luncheon this week is Melanie Golightly from Lenexa, KS. She will tell about growing up in a dysfunctional family and always trying to be the “good girl.” She discovers from God’s Word that being a Christian was about trusting the truth of Christ’s death on the cross instead of doing “good” works. This, of course, is where true happiness is found.

Those who love to bake pies or other goodies can bring them along. Last year we raised $80 for a home-made pie. Whoever got it, enjoyed it all the more because it went for a really good cause. One lady brings several dozen little home-made breads that sell for so much apiece. Some of the ladies bring beautiful gift baskets made up special so you can buy a really unique gift for that special person!

Of course, the artists will bring some of their paintings and art work to sell.

The needle experts will bring their treasures, and I think I know of someone bringing a basket of the German zwiebach and Sandhill Plum Jam! At any rate, it is totally a lot of nice and joyous fun!

Some of the memorable things people have brought in the past was the homemade divinity which was so delicious you could cry! Cute aprons and tea towels, baby cowboy boots, etc. to entertain your imaginations.

The luncheon itself is always delicious as it is prepared by the chef at the

Atrium Hotel and Conference Center. If you would like to come, call Jan at 665-1027. Tickets are only $10 and it starts at 12:30 on Oct. 21, but you need to call ahead.

I remember the first auction I can ever remember attending was on our Grandparent’s family farm. My dad and mom and baby sister and I had lived on it for a little over a year when my dad’s cousin talked him into moving us to California, the new land of milk and honey. Of course, being young and very impressionable, I thought it would be wonderful to live in the golden state and so I didn’t mind I had to sell all my childhood treasures…my wicker doll buggy and my wonderful Shirley Temple doll.

I  enjoyed listening to the auctioneer because he had a jolly sense of humor. As he was selling something he said “My uncle would give a thousand dollars if he could just see this piece of machinery in his yard!” I was impressed and asked my Dad about it. He told me that his uncle was blind. Anyways I was still young enough to believe everything people said! Besides, no one was running for president at the time!

At any rate, I do hope to see you at the luncheon and auction on the 21st of October. It will be fun to be in “the pursuit of happiness!” It’ll make me happy to see each of you!
