As the days get longer and the heat more intense, sometimes it is hard to keep our disposition on an even keel in the summer. And this is even though we do get to live in air-conditioned comfort. Sometimes it is hard to get ourselves going.
And so much has been going on these last few weeks. Our son John and his wife Carol were here for two weeks and life was really zooming along. However, it was sad to see them leave on the first Monday of July. We took them to the airport, got them unloaded. Then we went to the stores area and waited for them to open.
As we waited in the car, we zoomed into what was happening on the parking lot.
We were parked by a huge lamp post with a hole in its side. We didn’t really pay any attention to it until we suddenly saw two birds flying around. It seemed one was trying to keep the other one away from the lamp post for some reason. She really fought to keep him away. There was certainly nothing half-hearted about her actions. She put her life on the line! We were wondering why.
Finally the male bird flew away and she flew into the hole where we heard sounds of chirping. The mystery was solved. She was saving her little ones. Soon she flew off across the huge parking lot. It wasn’t long before she came back carrying food in her beak for the little ones. This happened over and over, in spite of the heat that was beginning to simmer on the parking lot. We wondered where she got the food and how hard it must be to do what she was doing. She kept plugging away.
John and I marveled at the tenaciousness of the bird but then we realized she lived with the way God had made her…to protect her little ones until they could fly away on their own. There was no way this was done by chance!
Then I wondered “Why aren’t we humans able to be tenacious all the time with the things that happen in our life?” God wanted us to have the power to choose whether to listen to him…or not. That way it would certainly be whole-hearted. But God wanted it to be real and from the heart so He let us choose to accept Him into our life and then follow his precepts because we loved him. Satan is at work, this day more than ever, and wants to weaken our resolve to follow Christ. He doesn’t like us to do the job God has given us and do it persistently. He wants us to fail so that Satan can taunt us and weaken our testimony to others.
We are living through a summer more hot in world happenings than ever before. It does seem there is so much to give us discouragement. We could just say
“What I do really doesn’t count for much and won’t make a difference anyways!”
The Bible advocates that “Little is much when God is in it!” It can make a difference to someone else if we don’t lose heart and live for him, just as the mother bird spent all her energy to feed her off spring.
We can keep doing what we know is right if it is in the Bible. Certainly we will perhaps be made fun of, laughed at and hear discouraging remarks. Should that deject us? If a little bird who has only a “bird brain” can resolutely keep to her task to raise her little brood, how much more should we as humans do to keep our country on a steady course.
Did the bird stop when the other bird pecked at her, flew at her and tried to disconcert her so he could harm the little ones? The answer to what I saw was absolutely not! The more he heckled her the more staunch she became.
I ask myself “Is that how I behave when trials come my way? Do I grow closer to God and let him take over the controls or do I give in at the first sign of trouble?
It is clear what God my creator wants me to do. Because God gave me a choice in what to do in life, I can either follow God’s lead or listen to Satan…and we all know what he wants us to do. Let’s be like the birds who do as God ordained them to do. Let us use the brain God gave us to follow him and to bring others to him! Let us all have love and patience and tenacity.
Above all, we will NOT fly away when trouble finds us, but will do the task God has ordained us to do!
