A large sinkhole was discovered west of Burrton last week and officials are worried it could grow larger. Firefighters with Burrton CFD No. 5 were called out to the area of Victory Road and Illinois Avenue in Reno county last Saturday. The firefighters found the sinkhole about a quarter of a mile south of that intersection in a pasture. Fire officials say the sinkhole is about 100 feet in diameter with straight sidewalls that went down about eight to 10 feet to the water level. The ground is cracked about eight feet back from the edge of the hole and sloping toward it, causing concern that the sinkhole could grow in size. Reno County Emergency Management also responded. That crew reported it to state officials. The rancher who had cattle in the pasture removed them for safety.
