Miranda Raevsky of Derby, Kan., was among the more than 300 Culver-Stockton students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members who spent Saturday, Aug. 22 volunteering for the seventh annual Extreme Dome Makeover. The volunteers spruced up 15 work sites in the town of Canton, Mo.

Volunteers spent the day doing various activities like painting, landscaping and cleaning. Project sites included both public areas and private residences. Public sites included Canton Senior Housing, the Lewis Street Playhouse, Canton R-V School, Happy Time Preschool, the Mississippi River Park, the Canton Community Garden and more.

Extreme Dome Makeover provides the opportunity to introduce incoming students to the community of Canton, as well as to their classmates, advisors and neighbors.

“Extreme Dome Makeover gives us a chance to give back to Canton, the community that supports us, while giving our students the opportunity to participate in service learning, which is a key component of their education at Culver-Stockton College,” said Amanda Sorenson, chaplain of C-SC. “EDM also helps the students build relationships with one another and with the community members they meet during the event. They begin to see how interconnected we all are. It also helps our students see the community in a new way and also see the impact that just a few hours of their time can make.”

Service learning is just one way Culver-Stockton has implemented experiential learning into its curriculum. Participating in Extreme Dome Makeover is required for incoming students as a part of the First-Year Experience course, but all students, faculty, staff and community members were invited to volunteer.

Culver-Stockton College, located in Canton, Mo., is a four-year residential institution in affiliation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). C-SC specializes in experiential education and is one of only two colleges in the nation to offer the 12/3 semester calendar, where the typical 15 week semester is divided into two terms, a 12-week term and a 3-week term.
