Hutchinson: “A Jazz Showcase” opens September 18th

The Hutchinson Community College music department will host the first Fine Arts Department performance of the semester on Friday, September 18.  “The Opener:   A Jazz Showcase” will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the B.J. Warner Recital Hall in the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

The concert will showcase all of the college’s vocal jazz groups and big bands:  Sonance, Badinage, Jazz Lab Band and Concert Jazz Band.

Tickets for the concert are just $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for senior citizen, $5.00 for high school students and children, with Hutchinson Community College students/faculty/staff admitted free with college ID. Tickets are available by calling the Fine Arts ticket office at 620-665-3399.

Songs featured at the concert will include the vocal jazz commission for the year, a Kerry Marsh arrangement of “Comment Allez-Vous” by Blossom Dearie and Pat Metheney’s “Travel on By”.  Other songs include the “Route 66” arrangement by Manhattan Transfer, a Neal Allsup arrangement of Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday”, the New York Voices adaptation of “Stone Soul Picnic”, “Satin Doll”, “Lil’ Darlin’”, “St. Louis Blues” and more.

“This will be a great opening performance,” said Schroeder.  “It’s the first-ever combined performance of the vocal and instrumental jazz programs that provides a tremendous opportunity for the community to experience the talent of our students.”
