The City Commission approved an amended development plan for Asbury Park retirement community that includes two 20-foot-wide, dead-end streets. Police and Fire/EMS staff voiced concerns about the risks associated with such narrow access with no second way in or out of the private streets. (Standard streets are 27 feet wide). Asbury Park President and CEO Tom Williams indicated that the families who intend to purchase the patio homes planned for the site did not want to lose the green space to a wider street and would reject the added cost of building a wider street. Williams said no street parking would be permitted and the streets would be built with low curbs so that emergency vehicles could drive up onto the grass if necessary. The Commission agreed to approve the plan as proposed.
