What is 4-H

I joined 4-H as Junior in high school after I was invited by a friend who thought that I might be interested in doing the horticulture project. I had always thought (mistakenly) that because I was not raised on a farm, and I did join 4-H when I was younger, there was no way I could be a part of it. I could not have been more wrong.

When I joined 4-H, I felt like I had just stumbled upon a jackpot of new opportunities. While I had come to be a part of the horticulture project, there were over 30 4-H projects that were available to be a part of! I could participate in rock hunts with the Geology project, create a custom garment in the Clothing Construction project or maybe even train my dog to compete in a dog show in the Dog Care and Training project.

Don’t miss out the opportunities for you or someone you know to participate, learn, and grow in 4-H! 4-H is for all youth, wherever they live–on farms, in suburbs, in cities. 4-H serves youth from all backgrounds and interests. It reaches boys and girls through 4-H clubs, special-interest groups and short-term projects, school-age child care, individual and family learning, mentoring, camping, and school enrichment. 4-H offers membership without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or handicap.

The great news is, Harvey County 4-H Clubs are looking for more members! To learn more about joining or volunteering for 4-H, stop by our office in the Harvey County Courthouse, or visit our website at www.harvey.k-state.edu.
