Rose Hill: The Rocket Green Club sponsored by Roger Grier, science teacher at Rose Hill High School recently traveled to Manhattan, KS to receive their Kansas Green School of the Year Award provided by Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE).  The Rocket Green Club members were recognized by KACEE for their leadership in educating local community members, parents and elementary students through special events and activities such as sponsoring the annual “No Waste Christmas Crafts Festival” where elementary students with the help of high school students, make gifts by reusing and recycling materials into items like ornaments or bird feeders. They now collect over 13,000 pounds of recycled material annually and have diverted over 50,000 pounds of school district solid waste from the landfill stream to the recycling stream over the past 6 years. The Kansas Green School of the Year Award is given to schools showing innovation, leadership, and outstanding environmental stewardship, in addition to incorporating environmental education into their school curriculum.  The award was new in 2009, and is co-sponsored by KACEE and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
