Salina: Kansas Wesleyan Debate Claims Second Place at Sweetheart Swing

Kansas Wesleyan University Debate and Forensics claimed second place in the school debate sweepstakes in a field of 18 colleges and universities at the 25th Annual Sweetheart Swing co-hosted at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. Other schools in the competition included co-host West Texas A&M University, University of Texas, Texas Christian University, University of Alabama, North Texas State University, Oklahoma City University, Cameron University, Tarrant County Community College, Tulsa Community College, and Wiley College in Marshall, TX, which gained fame in the film “The Great Debaters” starring Denzel Washington.

TEAM RESULTS

Freshman Josh Davis (Los Angeles, CA) won first place in Novice Parliamentary Debate; senior Amber Benning (Caney, KS) finished third in Open Lincoln Douglas Debate; and freshman Autumn Zimmerman (Concordia, KS) won first place in Open Lincoln Douglas Debate. Benning also won Outstanding Speaker for the tournament. Also competing and earning points were sophomore Katie Merrill (Arvada, CO) and junior Tanner Bowles (Cawker City, KS).

KWU DEBATE & FORENSICS

The Kansas Wesleyan University competitive Debate & Forensics Program has won 29 national championships and has been competitive each year in the regional and national tournaments it attends. The KWU squad attends about twelve tournaments per year. These tournaments include schools from throughout the United States, including yearly or bi-annual visits to Louisiana, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and California.
