You know it’s no ordinary fieldtrip when someone posing as the Vice President of the United States starts your day with the news that a nuclear missile could be headed to Hutchinson, assigns you a role as a member of the National Security Council and tells you to prepare a briefing for the President.

That’s what is in store for students from Sterling when they participate in the hands-on STEM educational experience, Cosmo Crisis, at the Cosmosphere on March 23, 2016.

In preparation for the experience, the students studied the historical, literary and scientific effects of nuclear weapons on humanity.  As a culmination of the students’ study of Hiroshima and the Manhattan Project, students from Sterling High School will study artifacts, hear from subject matter experts and work together to assess the facts surrounding a simulated nuclear threat.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students to experience working in a variety of career fields they may not have been introduced to before, while also applying critical skills they have learned in the classroom,” said Tracey Tomme, Vice President of Education at the Cosmosphere.
