Later this month, a worldwide leader in regenerative agriculture will spend ten days in St. Francis, Kan., conducting an in-depth training and design course at Callicrate Cattle Co.

Farmers, gardeners, landscapers and anyone interested in creating a healthy, resilient environment can sign up to spend a day or commit to the full ten-day intensive. The course will run daily from March 22 through 31. Full registration is $1,395; the day rate is $140. Meals and camping are included with registration.

Each day will cover a different topic, ranging from climatic and geographic considerations to fencing and building structures to economic development.

Conducting the course will be Australian environmental design expert Darren J. Doherty, who coined the term “regenerative agriculture” in 2013 to describe the detailed and intentional process of restoring, rehabilitating and rebooting rural and urban landscapes based on an expansive toolbox of environmentally sustainable practices. His recommendations typically include approaches like re-directing waterways, re-establishing native trees and pastures, integrating cover crops and planning appropriate livestock grazing systems.

Doherty describes the ten-day program as his marquee training event, designed to cover all aspects of regenerative land management. A unique highlight is that the training is conducted on a real working farm — in this case, Callicrate Cattle Co. — and includes having the landowners and managers study their options and make real-world decisions about how to apply them.

Doherty, a fifth generation farmer from Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, has more than 20 years of extensive experience worldwide in land management and project design. He is also a well respected speaker and author. During his career, he has developed nearly 2,000 design projects in close to 50 countries on five continents.
