Family meals help kids eat healthy

Your child may be 24% more likely to eat healthier foods and 12% less likely to be overweight. These statistics are attached to one family ritual – eating meals together. What greater way to start this easy tradition than on December 3rd, which is National Family and Consumer Sciences Day. National FCS Day’s theme is Dining In.

Dining in with your family and a good home cooked meal is a great way to improve relationships, make each other happy and have great conversations.

It doesn’t have to be your immediate family either! Get together with a group of friends, or include your neighbors. If in college have a meal with your roommates, sorority/fraternity house, committees or groups. It is easy to get together with people and eat a home cooked meal together.

If you are worried about dining in with your family here are a few tips:

·      Start simple. You don’t need an elaborate meal to dine in with your family.

·      Ask about each other’s day. By asking family members about their day lets them know that you care. Start by asking about their highs and lows of the day.

·      If the conversation lags, play a game of “Would you rather”.

·      Be nice to each other. By supporting each other while dining in it helps build confidence.

Please keep in mind if you cannot celebrate National Family and Consumer Sciences Day on December 3rd, it is okay to celebrate it earlier in the week.
