The University of Kansas Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences (HSES) invites walkers and runners to participate in the sixth-annual Dr. Bob Run 5K Event, supporting graduate student scholarships. The event will take place Sept. 19 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence.

This year, the Dr. Bob Run event committee has partnered with both the KU Athletics Department and Lawrence Hy-Vee Stores to provide participants added value experiences. Included in the cost of registration is a conference matchup single game day ticket to see KU Football take on the Baylor Bears on Oct. 10.

Also, the Dr. Bob Run event serves as the kickoff event for the 2015-16 Hy-Vee One Mile At A Time (OMAAT) Marathon Program. The program is a fitness challenge for any child in grades kindergarten through sixth to complete a marathon distance of 26.2 miles by walking or running one mile at a time over the duration of a calendar school year. Children who register for the Dr. Bob Run Kids Fun Run event are encouraged to participate in the Hy-Vee OMAAT program as well.

“We are excited to work with our partners this year and hope that our partnerships will add value and uniqueness to the participants’ 5K experience,” said Bernie Kish, 5K event committee chair.

The Dr. Bob Run was established in 2010 as a means to raise funds and awareness for the Dr. Bob Frederick Scholarship Program, while promoting a healthy, active family lifestyle. Frederick died June 12, 2009, and following his passing, the Frederick family established the Dr. Bob Frederick Scholarship to celebrate his life and professional contributions to the university and surrounding community.

Frederick was a KU Athletics director and served the HSES department as a part-time lecturer in the sport management program. He was an avid runner and also coached the Lawrence High School Girls Cross Country Team. He competed in numerous 5K races, marathons and triathlons. Throughout his career, Frederick challenged athletes, students, colleagues and friends to live a life that mattered. Through this scholarship, his memory continues to make a difference in the lives of students.

The 5K course at Rim Rock Farm has been described as scenic and challenging. As the home to the KU cross country team, Rim Rock Farm features two covered bridges, specific hills, turns and other landmarks that are named after former Jayhawks.
