Enthusiasm for beekeeping has expanded throughout southeast Kansas.  For beginning and veteran beekeepers alike, K-State Research and Extension will host two workshops featuring bee expert Sharon Dobesh, associate director of the Great Plains Diagnostic Network based at Kansas State University.

On Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cherokee County 4-H Building in Columbus, Dobesh will present information about the Integrated Pest Management program and how it relates to honeybees and how to prepare a hive for winter. The building is located at 114 W. Country Rd. The meeting is sponsored by Farmers Coop of Baxter Springs and Columbus Kansas and the Cherokee County Area Beekeepers Club. Refreshments will be provided.

On Friday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m., Dobesh will hold a Beginning Beekeeping Clinic at the Riverside Park and Zoo 4-H Building, 1736 N. 5th St. in Independence, Kansas.

There will be time at the meetings for attendees to ask questions in order to gain a greater understanding of beekeeping.

Both meetings are free to attend. For more information about the Columbus meeting contact Dale Helwig at the Cherokee County Extension office at 620-429-3849 or email [email protected]. For information about the Beginning Beekeeping Clinic contact Jeri Geren at the Wildcat District Extension office at 620-331-2690 or email [email protected].
