Spider Mites are Bugging Area Gardeners

Spider mites are a problem almost every summer in Kansas, and this summer is no exception. Spider mites have been showing up on a wide range of plants, from tomatoes and beans to burning bush and spruce. The spider mite population increases quickly during hot weather, so regular control is important.
Look for: Leaves showing yellow or white stippling (small dots), as well as fine webbing.
Check: Hold a white sheet of paper under the leaf and tap. Mites will show up as specks on the paper that will move around.
Treat: Spray the leaves, especially the undersides of the leaves with a hard stream of water to dislodge the mites. Spray every 3-4 days for best results.
