The number of school districts in Kansas could be cut by more than half under a bill that will have a hearing next week, according to an estimate put together by KASB.

Here is a link to the report that compiles a possible realignment scenario within the parameters of House Bill 2504.

Under the KASB estimate, Kansas would go from 286 districts to 132, as many districts would be absorbed into others, the report says.

Under this scenario, the average size district would go from 1,719 students to 3,724. Only 50 districts would be unaffected by the proposed changes.

Some of the report relies on “best guesses” in terms of which districts would be combined. These have been noted in the report.

The House Education Committee will hold a hearing on HB 2504 at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3.

HB 2504 would require every county with 10,000 or fewer students to be a single district and those with over 10,000 must have at least 1,500 students.
