Memorial Day Swine Show

On Memorial Day this weekend, Harvey County 4-H will host the second annual Spring Swine Show. At this show and many other 4-H livestock shows, participants will not only exhibit an animal that they have worked hard to take care of, but also work to build important life skills.

This weekend we expect more than 120 pigs to be exhibited; all done by 4-H youth age 7-18. Spring livestock shows in particular help youth to gauge their own skill level while learning from their peers as they work with their animals this summer. These youths will continue working to care for their animals and the land that they raise them on. This practice helps to develop more accountable and engaged youths as they take on agricultural responsibilities.

Youth livestock shows also provide insight into the livestock industry. Youth quickly develop an understanding of how to care for and raise animals, while also learning animal breeds, parts and nutrition. While participants learn new skills and build stronger work ethics, they also get to have some fun. Youth livestock shows provide a space for developing friendships and connections. These friendships aid in the satisfaction of career goals as well as the simple need for companionship.

We are looking forward to hosting 4-H youth from across the state at the second annual 4-H Spring Swine Show this weekend.  This Memorial Day weekend will be filled with friends and lots of pigs, but we also want to take the time to remember the heroes who have paid the ultimate price to insure our freedom. Happy Memorial Day from Harvey County 4-H!
