Topeka, KS, May 9, 2018—The Kansas Association of Community Action Programs is celebrating Community Action Month, dedicated to recognizing the success of the national Community Action Network. America’s Community Action Agencies connect millions of children and families to greater opportunity, transforming their lives and making our communities — and our nation— stronger.

To raise awareness of the important work Community Action Programs do throughout the state, Governor Colyer signed a proclamation stating that May is Community Action Month.  Community Action Agency leaders and Kansas Housing Resources Council staff attended the signing ceremony.

“Community Action Month is a time to honor and celebrate the impact Community Action has in the lives of families and communities across the country,” stated Scott Anglemyer, Executive Director. “The Community Action network offers insight to policymakers and citizens looking to understand what is working on the ground to help families thrive—creating smarter solutions that can be put to work within communities across the country.”

Anglemyer continued, “12.1 % of Kansans live in poverty, that is 342,544 men, women and children.  A disproportionate number of these people are single parent families with children. Community Action Agencies work extremely hard to provide the assistance needed across the state.  This past year, our agencies served over 20,000 low income Kansas families job training, tax preparation, income counseling, housing development, emergency assistance, transportation, Head Start and Early Head Start, weatherization and case management.  Their work changes lives and strengthens our entire state,” Anglemyer said.

The Kansas Association of Community Action Programs was established in 1968 to create economic opportunities for low income people in Kansas. Kansas Association of Community Action Programs is a member of the national Community Action Network, originally created in 1964.
