Agriculture is the #1 industry in Kansas, with aircraft manufacturing and education close behind. Approximately 90% of Kansas land is for agricultural use, and the state ranks high in wheat, grain sorghum and silage production. This summer, the Kansas State Fair is encouraging Kansas youth to learn more about agriculture by participating in their Summer Reading Challenge.

Youth participants will need to read eight books over the summer and log them on the provided reading journal. Books read aloud by an adult can also be counted.

Participants will be tasked with reading books about a fair or carnival, a farm, an animal, an entertainer, art, food and about Kansas. By participating in this Kansas Agriculture Reading Challenge, youth and adults alike will learn what makes Kansas so special.

The reading project will start May 15th and run through August 15th. To participate, download a free reading journal online at http://www.kansasstatefair.com/p/fair/education/590 and start keeping track on May 15th! Once a journal has been completed it should be mailed to the Kansas State Fair. Participants will receive a reading fun pack which includes a special ribbon and fun Kansas agriculture information. Add the Kansas State Fair Reading Challenge to your list of summer activities this year!
