The season for the Barton Community College women’s basketball team came to an end Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the Region VI Tournament at Wichita’s Koch Arena losing 60-46 to Coffeyville Community College.   The Lady Cougars fought off a rough start to trail by one at the break but couldn’t overcome a tough possession night of twenty-nine turnovers in seeing the season come to a close.  Barton, the fourth seed out of the Jayhawk West, finishes the season at 19-11 while the top seed out of the Jayhawk East improves to 24-8 and marches on the semifinal round to take on Seward County Community College.

With Phikala Anthony picking up two early fouls and Coffeyville’s three-quarter press, the Red Ravens controlled tempo building a 15-7 lead.  Ciera Lampe did her best keeping Barton in the game knocking down two of her career high five treys and a 5-0 Barton run helped the Lady Cougars cut the deficit going into the 8:44 media timeout to 15-12.

As both teams struggled from the field, Barton kept within striking distance until Anthony’s trey from the top of the arc tied it up at nineteen with 3:42 to play.  The teams would exchange free throw shots the rest of the way with Coffeyville holding on for a 22-21 halftime advantage.

Plagued by fifteen first half turnovers, the second half didn’t start much better for Barton in the second half as the Red Ravens capitalized on three early turnovers to go on a 6-0 stretch interrupted by a Lampe 1-of2 trip to the charity stripe then tacking on another 7-0 stretch taking the lead out to 34-21 at the fifteen minute mark.

A Lampe left baseline trey stopped the Coffeyville run and a Katrina Roenfeldt trey from the other side cut the deficit to nine with 11:45 to play.  The Red Ravens responded with a 9-2 run including eight straight to push the lead out to fifteen to the 9:03 media timeout.

Coffeyville stretched the lead out to sixteen in the next couple of minutes but buckets by Anthony, two from Cauley, and another trey by Lampe brought Barton back to within seven with five minutes to play.

A 5-0 Coffeyville run in the next minute and a half seemed to put the cap on the game but the Lady Cougars again battled back to draw within six as Lampe drained her career high fifth three-pointer of the game.

Having the plague all night, four straight turnovers for Barton sealed the Lady Cougars’ fate in the next minute while Coffeyville scored the next six pushing the lead back out to twelve with just under a minute to play.  Barton had another attempt at goal, as well as, recording their twenty-ninth turnover in having their season end 58-46.

Ciera Lampe led Barton in her final game as a Lady Cougar with a career high 5-of-8 from beyond the arc for sixteen points while tying a career high with eight rebounds.  Fellow sophomore Phikala Anthony was the lone other Lady Cougar to reach double digits ending her career with a twelve point game and tying Lampe for the team lead in rebounds with eight.  Katrina Roenfeldt dished out a team high four points while sharing the team lead in steals with fellow freshman Dominique Baker recording three each.

Devin Cosper led three Red Ravens in double digits scoring twenty-one points on 29% shooting hitting 7-of-24 none bigger than a dagger of three-pointer as the shot clock would down giving Coffeyville a twelve point lead with 3:42 to play.  Chanel Khammarath, who shot in her fair share of daggers from long range connecting on 3-of-7 shooting, finished with fifteen points and led with four assists and four steals while Caletria Curtis added twelve points to go along with a team high seven rebounds.
