Wichita Women’s Fair highlights the latest in fashion, food, fun

WICHITA, KAN. – The 19th annual Wichita Women’s Fair Feb. 17-19 will showcase  385 exhibits, runway shows, cooking demos, a business workshop, motivational speakers, health screenings and shopping galore under one roof at Century II.   

A Business Workshop at 3 p.m. Friday led by Kara Hunt, the 2013 Kansas HR Professional of the Year, will share with attendees how to succeed in today’s complex work place, including tips on electronic communications.

The workshop will be followed at 4 p.m. by “Five Strategic Fashion Formulas,” presented by image consultant Carrie Trieschman, who will discuss how to put together a successful wardrobe for any age, body type or budget.

Friday evening is billed as Girls’ Night Out and will feature a runway fashion and hair shows, cooking demo, shopping, and radio personality and wine expert Guy Bower’s presentation and wine tasting, “Drink Pink. . . It’s Better Than You Think,” at 5:30 p.m.

Celebrity physician and traditionally trained neurologist Dr. Romila Mushtaq, M.D. – better known as “Dr. Romie” — will present “Busy Brain Cure: Using Mindfulness to Rewire, Refresh and De-stress” at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. A leading expert in brain health and stress management, she will discuss how to take control when “busy brain” leads to feeling out of control, anxious and tired.

She’ll share with attendees how to reduce stress by applying mindfulness techniques in their daily lives as well as how to improve focus at work, sleep better and feel more in control.

Following her presentation, she will be available at sponsor Via Christi Health’s booth.   

 

Fashion, hairstyles and more

The fair will feature the latest in fashion and beauty trends through runway shows, demonstrations and exhibitors offering tips and products about everything from apparel and accessories to makeup, anti-aging treatments and plastic surgery.

Coordinated by Wichita-based Models and Images, a runway show featuring fashions from ARMAR Boutique, White Lily Boutique, Maggie Grace Boutique, LulaRoe, Cheeky Chic and Shop Mondays will hit the runway at 1:30 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Apparel from Oaklyn Reece Boutique, MODEWichita, SPECs Eyewear, Lucky Rhinestone Boutique, Style TribeMobile Boutique, Paisley Parrot Fashion Truck by K.Lane’s Boutique and All Yours Fashion will be modeled on the Main Stage at 5:30 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.  

   The award-winning owner of Eric Fisher Salon and Eric Fisher Academy will demonstrate haircuts and the newest trends during “Eric Fisher Live!” on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Crave Beauty Academy Hair Show will present the “Crave Empowerment Hair Show” at 6:30 p.m. Friday. They will also offer $5 mini styles, mini manicures and glitter tattoos in their booth.  

Models and Images International Model Search will take center stage at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The grand prize is a modeling scholarship and contract as well as an opportunity to interview with modeling scouts from around the world. For information, call 316-612-9070 or visit www.modelsandimages.com.

One fashion show will go to the dogs – literally. As a benefit for Hands of Hope Rescue Dogs, a Doggy Runway Fashion Show at 12:30 p.m. Saturday will showcase rescue-dog models escorted by Kansas Firefighters Calendar Team members and Models & Images models. Dogs will be available for adoption at the fair.

Cooking demos, chefs share secrets

The Cooking Stage will feature a variety of demos throughout the weekend. The first to take the stage on opening day at 2 p.m. will be a representative from Wyldewood Cellars, a family-owned vineyard and winery, who will share tips on cooking with wine.

Chef Joe Parten of Carrabba’s Italian Grill will demonstrate Prosciutto Wrapped Pork Tenderloin with Port Wine Fig Sauce and his signature dish, Pasta Weesie (sautéed shrimp with garlic and mushrooms in a white wine lemon butter sauce) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

During her Healthy Sweet Treats cooking show, Krista Sanderson of Eat Real America will show how to turn real ingredients into snacks and desserts at 11 a.m. Saturday. Her Cooking with the Seasons presentation at 12:30 p.m. Sunday will demonstrate how to easily cut a butternut squash and turn it into a veggie-loaded Moroccan curry dish.  

Paul Freimuth, executive chef at the Hyatt Regency in Wichita and former executive sous chef at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, along with John Moses will present a cooking show at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.  Moses has been part of Envision programs since he was 13 and began to progressively lose his eyesight. He is now a student in the Culinary Arts program at Kansas City Kansas Community College with plans to graduate in May. They will demonstrate Deviled Eggs with a Twist, Avocado Toast and Avocado Chocolate Mousse.

Chef Josh Rathbun, who has been a chef at high-profile restaurants in Australia and Denver, will take the cooking stage for a demo at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The current executive chef of Siena Tuscan Steakhouse at the Ambassador Hotel in Wichita will demonstrate Ricotta Ravioli and Cacio e Pepe. While working at Mercantile restaurant in Denver, he was named one of Zagat’s Top 30 Under 30 restaurant professionals.

In addition to demos, dozens of booths will offer products for sale such as cookbooks, aprons, 23 varieties of family-crafted cheese and sausage, homemade salsas, barbecue sauce, coffee cakes, brownies, spice mixes, relishes, oils and vinegars, pasta, dip mixes, dessert coffees, gourmet foods and wines.

       Fair hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for children 6-12. Children 5 and under are free.
