The Kansas Emergency Medical Services Association (KEMSA), a statewide organization dedicated to the improvement of medical services in Kansas, has named Reno County EMS recipient of the 2017 Career Service of the Year Award.

The award was presented to Reno County EMS officials at the KEMSA “Honoring Our Own” annual banquet which was held August 12 in Mulvane.

Reno County EMS, which operates under the umbrella of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC), is staffed by 35 paramedics and eight EMTs and, last year, responded to more than 6,100 calls.

In announcing the award, KEMSA officials lauded Reno County EMS for their outstanding efforts in supporting HRMC, a Level III Trauma Center. Also, it was noted that EMS is a long time supporter of community events, including the Kansas State Fair, and has many employees that are active members of several health advisory committees. KEMSA commended EMS for their efforts to reduce response time for cardiovascular patients through standardization and sequence engineering, the development of new protocols, the implementation of new and relevant supervisory positions, development of a training program and rebranding initiatives of ambulances and crew uniforms.

In summarizing the award, KEMSA officials said, “Reno County EMS is rapidly changing and improving in its ability to provide progressive and compassionate care to those in need.”

Earlier this year, Reno County EMS received the American Heart Association Mission Lifeline Gold Plus Award for rapid response in treating patients dealing with the onset of a heart attack and assisted the HRMC Emergency Department in achieving recertification as a Level 3 Trauma Center.

Terry David, Chief of Reno County EMS, commended the department he leads for achieving the distinction. “Reno County EMS employees are passionate and dedicated to providing good health care to the citizens of Reno County and deserve the credit for winning the honors and recognition that we have received during the past several months,” David said.

Ken Johnson, President and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, said the award signifies the successful culmination of months of hard work and planning by an organization committed to provide the fastest and highest quality response to emergency situations in Reno County.

“The mission of Reno County EMS is to provide emergency medical care to nearly 65,000 residents of this county and to work in conjunction with similar agencies in the Hutchinson area,” Johnson said. “This organization ranks as a model to Kansas for what it takes to be among the best in emergency medical care.”
