Bethany College volleyball drops five setter at Southwestern

The Bethany College volleyball team traveled to Winfield to take on Southwestern College on Wednesday evening. The Swedes came up just short against the Moundbuilders forcing a fifth set before eventually falling 3-2; 18-25, 25-20, 25-12, 24-26, and 15-12.

The Swedes opened the first set strong and jumped to an early lead, 9-5. However, the Moundbuilders responded with a 15-6 spurt to take a 20-15 lead. Bethany pulled to within three points, 20-17, but eventually fell 25-18 in the first set.

Nevertheless, the Swedes responded by winning the next set 25-20. This time the Swedes found themselves in an early hole, 9-3, but came storming back to tie the game at 12 points. From there the two teams went back and forth tying the set, and taking narrow leads, until the Swedes finished the set on an 8-3 run.

Bethany continued to roll as they beat Southwestern 25-12 in the third set. The third set was in no doubt from the beginning. The Swedes jumped on the Moundbuilders and led 6-0, and even 8-1 at one point as the continued to roll to a 13 point third set win.

Bethany came up just short in the fourth set losing 26-24. Bethany trailed by five points late in the set, but stormed back to take a 24-23 lead. Southwestern scored the next three points to even the sets at two.

In the fifth set Bethany held a 7-4 advantage, but allowed the Moundbuilders to gain momentum. Once they did, Southwestern outscored Bethany 7-1, to take an 11-8 lead. From there Southwestern held on to take the final and deciding set 15-12.

“We played hard and I could not be more proud of them,” said head coach Cheri Lindsay. “We can’t dwell on this loss though, we just need to stay together as a team and be ready for Friday.”

Bethany will look to rebound Friday as they host rivals Kansas Wesleyan University at 7 p.m.
