It was a very competitive start for the opening match of 2015 for McPherson College men’s soccer as they took on Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas on Thursday night. Following just over 100 minutes of play, the Ravens took the contest 2-1.
“It’s a tough one to swallow for the first game out of the gate,” said Head Coach Doug Quint. “However, we can take a lot of positive things from it. We were good in the run of play and created enough chances to win the match. Defensively we need to be more disciplined so we don’t concede too many free kicks and corners.”
Of Benedictine’s 21 total shots, 12 that were on target, most were taken off of set pieces and corner kicks. The Bulldogs were minus eight in set pieces for the match.
“Benedictine is an extremely organized side and it was tough to break them down. They are well coached and were also really good in the air tonight.”
The Ravens were the first to score on their home field as they netted a goal in the 19th minute off a corner kick. MC quickly responded as Jesus Pescador got one past the Benedictine keeper two minutes later to even the game at 1-1.
The later stages of the second half were very physical as the two clubs tried to find the game winner; the Bulldogs were handed three yellow cards in the final 20. Both sides had their chances to take the game in regulation but neither was able to capitalize, forcing additional time.
A mere two shots were taken in the first OT, both by McPherson; one went wide while the other was saved by the Ravens’ goalie. Just 50 seconds into the second overtime, a BC corner was knocked around in the box and found its way into the back of Mac’s net to give the game to the home team at 2-1.
Aaron Parrott played the first 45 in goal for the Bulldogs; he allowed one goal while recording five saves. German transfer Arthur Lamparter held a clean sheet for 55 minutes but conceded the final goal of the night; he tabbed four saves.
Mac has just one day of rest before their next contest as they host No. 18 University of Science and Arts on September 5th with the start time set for 3:00 p.m. (CT) in the Kennel.
