Wichita’s Tom Elman to throw First Pitch at August 2 NBC World Series

Tom Elman, 70, of Wichita, Kansas has been selected by Area Agencies on Aging in Kansas to be honored as Keeping Seniors in the Game!SM first pitcher on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at the 7 p.m. feature game of the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series.

 

 

The 83rd NBC World Series happens at Wichita’s Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Games begin Saturday, July 22 and continue through Sunday, August 6.

 

Tom has two children– Sandy and Tim–and seven grandchildren.

 

Born and raised in Hammond, Indiana, Tom is an avid and lifelong Cubs fan. He attended his first Cubs game June 11, 1950 and admits to having OCD- Obsessive Cubs Devotion. Tom has an extensive Chicago Cubs baseball card collection with cards dating back to 1876. He was lucky enough to attend last year’s World Series. And, yes, his favorite baseball memory is seeing the Cubs big win in the 2016 World Series.

 

Tom’s first love is basketball. He attended college at San Diego State University where he played on the basketball team in the early 1960s. He went on to Ball State University where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 1988, Tom retired from being a teacher of history, English and shop after 24 years. He taught at high schools in Indiana and Colorado and substitute taught at many schools in between.

 

Tom is now an active member at Wichita’s Linwood Senior Center where he volunteers and enjoys socializing with others. He helps serve the annual Mother’s Day Tea and also helps facilitate discussion for the Center’s book club. Along with this service, Tom also volunteers at The Independent School in Wichita. He is a score-keeper for many different athletic events including volleyball and basketball, helps with the track team and enjoys cheering for the baseball team.

 

Tom was nominated for the Keeping Seniors in the Game!SM honor by the Central Plains Area Agency on Aging. This group serves seniors and caregivers in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties.
