Auction officials met recently with Missouri’s Fourth Congressional District Representative discussing small business issues and the National Auctioneers Association (NAA).

Jason Winter, Harrisonville, Missouri, NAA president, and David Webb, Stilwell, Webb & Associates, visited Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler in Washington, D.C.

Their meeting was part of the National Auctioneers Association’s Day On The Hill event September. 12, 2019.

Among other small business issues discussed was legislation relating to the Supreme Court decision South Dakota vs Wayfair. “Impacts of this decision, dealing with interstate sales tax, could have negative effect on small businesses, including auctions,” Webb said.

“Resulting from that decision, many states collect tax on items purchased from a seller in another state,” Webb explained. “That is even if the seller does not maintain a physical business in the state to which items are shipped.”

State and local sales taxes can be assessed on items purchased from traditional retailers or remote sellers. That includes auction companies which ship or deliver outside their home states.

“NAA facilitated Day on the Hill to provide its members an opportunity to share experiences and inform lawmakers,” Webb said.

The National Auctioneers Association, headquartered in Overland Park, was founded in 1949.

“It is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to auction professionals representing auctioneers around the world,” Webb said.
