I remember: Spring has sprung

Yes, it is here! It has finally arrived and we need it badly! We weren’t quite sure if we would get one this year, what with everything going on, but it came! I am happy to report Spring has officially sprung and it came on Sunday. This will soon be followed by the most special day of the year…Easter. The good thing about this holiday is that, if we enjoy it by letting the good news permeate our lives, we can have peace…a much needed commodity in the world today.

Actually, we didn’t have too much bad weather this winter and probably could have used a little more moisture, but the grass is greening, the tulips are peeking out and soon the grass will need mowing again. I saw my first red robin the other day and he really looked happy as he played hop scotch on the lawn.

Guess what, now it is the next day and it is snowing in Kansas. The white, odd-looking flakes of snow are flying in the atmosphere. I had to go on an errand and I did notice the snow is very cold as I got out of the car.

I will skip over all the things I wanted to accomplish this winter and concentrate on the pleasant. We have made it back to the Young at Heart Ministries most of the time on Thursday mornings and still enjoy it so much. We always have a local pastor or speaker from one of our area churches, special music and a wonderful time singing the old familiar hymns we sang as we grew up. Since we are all a little “older” we do get to advise each other on how to help our memories along, hear better, realize our aches and pains are pretty much the same and that no, we don’t die from most of them. It’s amazing how much better we feel, knowing that! We pray for our country, the election, our children and each other and that way we feel the concern from one another and from the Main Source which of course, is God.

You think that, of course, I got all my downsizing done that I wanted to do? Come on, you didn’t really think that I would, did you? Let’s say it’s a little better than it was but not very much. I did find a lot of writing I had saved through the years and was aching to work on a book, but didn’t make that either.

Probably could have done more of that if we didn’t sometimes take time out to go out to lunch with friends, but then those are the fun things.

Of course, the big basketball season is on this week. The Juco tournament at the Sports Arena is on and Hutch is doing very well. I do remember when we were younger, we’d attend a game once in awhile and it was fun. Now, as we are older, it makes more sense to stay at home and either listen on the radio or watch the big games on the TV.

I did get up early this morning and got John’s zwie bach ready to bake. Then I woke him up before I left on an errand, and he finished baking them. We who grew up in homes whose ancestors came from Germany to America  are used to having the two bun German bread baked on Saturday and eaten for Sunday “faspa” at four in the afternoon, usually with cheese and bologne.

I turned up the furnace before but am still cold, I think I’ll turn it up a bit more. Some of us can still remember how we used to heat the house on the farm with a pot-bellied coal stove. Each morning we had to do certain chores like fill up the kerosene lamps and the cook stove, bring in buckets of coal for heating, and always pump another bucket of water and bring it in for many different things. Some times we forget to be thankful for the many conveniences we now have. On the farm you could never play hooky and not do something or you would freeze.

Life has changed a lot and I really do appreciate all our conveniences we enjoy. God really does look after us in a wonderful way, doesn’t He? Have a wonderful week end!
