How School is Going

It’s been some time since we checked in with another school update. To put it lightly, we are counting down till summer. Even more so this year, given how much change COVID has brought to the school hallways. It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago most of us were stuck in an online school, going from zoom to zoom waiting for the online lectures to end. Since then, we’ve made leaps and bounds to get back to where we once were.

Hopefully, we won’t have to worry about being at risk, or putting our loved ones at risk because of the virus. Regardless, let’s take a look at a few things that have transpired in Reno County schools.

Starting with the most recent turn of events, the Haven School Board of Education plans to meet on the 12th to discuss the matter of masks in school, among other things. The Board of Education seeks to come to a decision as to whether or not masks will be mandated among the students and faculty of Haven. This is a decision that they will have to come to without the guidance of the late, Bryce Matteson, may he rest in peace.

Other schools in the Reno County area have also experienced some interesting changes. Buhler was one such school. Now, during the days of online school, it was impossible to do almost any athletics or academic activities, but we still managed. With the recent developments, however, the Buhler advanced choir group got to go on their out-of-state singing tour. An opportunity that not many schools across the nation have been blessed enough to have. The trip was one of the few good things that have come out of a year of disappointment.

Nickerson High Choir and Band also recently were able to go on a trip to Sterling College to perform there for a special concert. In other parts of USD 309, life has stayed relatively the same in comparison to the rest of the year. Sports are continuing as normal, with basketball, track, etc. starting up with competitions having already begun (just beginning in some sports).

I believe I can speak for all students when I say that we are quite ready for this school year to be over. To be fair, it wasn’t much of one. The COVID restrictions began at the end of last school year, and it feels as though we are just getting over it at the end of this school year. We’ve sacrificed an entire year to follow different regulations and procedures that kept us safe. Don’t get me wrong, student safety comes first, but, it sucks when something wipes out half of your school experience. Of course, there are some members of the student body that would beg to differ. They prefer the manageability of online school, and to be fair, it was manageable. But there are those of us who would prefer the way things were. We would prefer the student life we had a couple of years ago. When we didn’t know what social distancing meant. This isn’t anyone’s fault, rather, it is the unfortunate circumstance of our current dilemma that causes us to wish for those times.

That is how school is going, for those of you who asked. Speaking of which as a student, I would like to say thank you to all of the parents who ask “how was school?” it may not seem like much, and your kid might hate it, but it means a lot. So, thank you, and have a wonderful day.
