GEEZER

EVERONE DESERVES A FRESH START.
I’VE STARTED OVER SO MANY TIMES
THAT I DON’T WANT TO START OVER.
I JUST WANT TO FINISH SOMETHING.

It has happened to me so many times lately that a country star is introduced, and I go WHAT? I don’t recognize the name or their string of ‘number one’ hits.

I wonder, did I fall asleep under a tree and wake up 20 years later? I hear these musical wonders and after they stop screaming and wonder, “is this country?”

I caught a segment of the Grand Ole Opry and only knew one of the three performers.

I have friends in the music world that actually have talent. I guess this has ruined me for formula music. That is where a group of executives sit in NY or LA and record people that follow their formulas.

I am sure some of these musicians are nice people. But so are many that have garage bands.

It is not like I have not grown with new musicians throughout my life. It is that I don’t need a poll to tell me what I like. When they killed radio personalities and formulated the shows in Atlanta, I guess I just tuned out. Yet I still spend hours listening to good music.

I have tried several times to work with radio stations to actually play what listeners wanted. No matter how many stations these people bankrupted, each always knew everything there is to know about it. Even when there are proven successes, they would not try anything different.

My mistake was not to get a east or west coast PO Box and label myself as a ‘consultant’ and charge obscene amounts to mail them pre-programed shows.

When the industry sold out, even the local stations, listeners habits changed. Artists and writers now are cheated out of royalties. Now covid killed the only way left to make a living, live concerts.

Maybe the younger generation is not a total loss? Vinyl is making a comeback. Some are rediscovering stories and melodies. Hank, Johnny, Lefty, are being rediscovered.
What I realize is that loving good music, talent, history, honesty, and quiet volumes mean I am officially a geezer.

Just hear that lonesome whippoorwill…
