Patience Shoes

Last week I told my BFF I needed to go to a particular store to pick up a Christmas item. Her response to me was: “wear your patience shoes because it will be busy and there will only be one checker at a cash register even though they have six registers”.

I told her I can’t find mine, I must have lost them somewhere along the way, or someone stole them. I sure used to have more patience than I do now, but not since I lost my patience shoes.

Not enough cash registers open is what fires me up the quickest. I am not sure why stores will not keep a closer eye on the registers. When there are 4 or more people lined up at the one or two registers that are open, with full carts of food or merchandise, they should open more registers.

The workers they call up wouldn’t have to stay at the register once the rush is over, but it would be nice to have some one come and check out. Maybe if we left a full cart of food or merchandise sitting there and walked away they would change things.

I never had much patience with kids that ran amuck in the beauty shop while the mother’s ignored them. But I was not shy about telling kids what they could and could not touch or to stay out of the supply room. There are too many chemicals and sharp objects in a beauty shop for them to be running loose.

Patience has been a virtue this last year while writing the book. I’ve asked many times for information or photos from the residents and alumni from my home town. Some of the questions needed more time for them to find the answers or find the photos. That tested my patience but I learned that when I waited patiently someone would come through with the information I needed.

Now let’s discuss drivers on the roads today. To drive on the streets today you need to wear your patience shoes and take along a spare pair. In the movie “Shawshank Redemption” an old prisoner was released after 50 years. He wrote to the guys in prison and told them the world had gotten in a big darn hurry.

Lots of drivers on the roads will not wait their turn at a 4-way stop. I know we’ve all stopped at a 4-way stop and to your right there are two cars. The driver on your right, if you get there at the same time, has the right away.

So after the driver on your right goes across in front of you, you think it is your turn to go straight ahead. But before you can even move the second car follows them through the intersection like he is being towed by the first car. And they always give you that smug grin when they do that. Don’t you wish you had an old beat up vehicle and you could just take your turn and teach them a lesson? It sure would be tempting and you would have plenty of witnesses.

The other problem that really gets me going is the intersections that have a lane, usually a right lane, that runs out just past the intersection. Main and 30th, west bound, and 17th and Severance, west bound, are the worst.

The person in that lane to your right is supposed to yield and then merge into your lane when they can. At least 90% of the time they do not yield. They try to push you over into on coming traffic or make you stop so they can get into your lane. Where are their patience shoes?

I went to the courthouse to turn in a friends tag. I checked in at the computer screen, got my number and started to watch the screen to see where my number was. The screen said that it would be an hour when I sat down.

45 minutes later it still said 1 hour on the screen and during that time two of the three workers took their lunch break. Then there was only 1 of the 6 windows open to help 20+ that were waiting.

One hour turned into 2 1/2 hours of waiting for the 2 minutes it took to turn the tag in when my turn came. When I asked the lady if it was a normal day she just rolled her eyes and said; 4 of the 8 workers were off that week. She needed her patience shoes too that day.

So…….. as you do your Christmas shopping or other errands and you still have your patience shoes be sure to wear them. You are going to need them. If anyone can tell me where they sell patience shoes please let me know……….NOW!!  I need to get a new pair because I lost mine or someone stole my pair of patience shoes.
