A Cup o’ Good News

By Dylan Yoder

We have officially made it through half of 2020. Isn’t it insane to think about all of the troubling things that have “plagued” our world in the past several months? In just six short months our world has been turned into one of fear and anger expressed by its inhabitants. I don’t know about you, but as for me, I’ve had it with the never-ending craziness of the world. Instead of looking at all of the bad in the world, take a second to look at some of the good stuff that has bloomed in spite of the chaos surrounding it. Starting with the city of Sydney Australia.

The city of Sydney Australia made a recent breakthrough in terms of preserving the environment around it. The city itself has officially converted to a 100% green city. That is to say, all of their energy is sourced from renewable resources which benefits the inhabitants, and the environment. Home to a quarter of a million people, Sydney now utilizes two solar farms and the largest wind farm in New South Wales to keep its city running. The city became carbon neutral in 2007 and since then has been making massive strides in order to coexist with the world, rather than take from the world. Keep it up Australia.

Covid-19 has given us some good believe it or not, one of those goods is the recent boom in gardening activity. Yes, I said it, gardening. Whatever your beliefs are about the necessity or usefulness of those leafy greens, there’s no doubt that gardening itself can be a healthy outdoor activity in these “indoor isolationist” times. There’s something special about keeping a plant healthy and watching it grow just as it was designed.

A man in San Francisco has recently found another way to do a bit of good in the world, by serving free coffee for his neighbors every morning. Talk about a cup o’ good news, I wouldn’t mind one myself. Regardless of your stance on the uncontested amazingness of that steamy cup o’ joe, there’s no doubt that this man is the spitting image of being a good neighbor. Even if they don’t enjoy coffee, simply chatting with your neighbors and the people around you can be heavily beneficial in your life, especially during isolation.

For some Local good news, the Hutchinson Salvation Army has been trying their best to stay open and continue their good work in spite of the pandemic. During these troubling times, they’ve been helping families continue on with their lives. With loss of jobs and economic instabilities, the Salvation Army has definitely been a positive influence on our small but sturdy society.

Once the central point for Coronavirus outbreak numbers, New York and Italy reach lowest numbers in cases since March. Things are finally looking up for those areas, and let’s hope they stay that way. With respect to the dropping numbers of cases, hospitalizations have also dropped, leaving a ragged looking medical team in the wake. In truth, medical professionals do more for us than we know, keeping us safe from the unseen attackers. Although it makes sense to praise them now, during our time of need, we should always be grateful to the people who tend to sicknesses that we cannot by ourselves. Thank you medical workers, we owe you one.

That sums up only a small sliver of the good news there is in the world recently. There are still many more to be reported, and even more that go unnoticed. So for those of you out there, who have done good in the world, thank you for this cup o’ good news.
