Kala Pinkham of Derby, was chosen as Freshman Advantage mentor at William Woods University.

Incoming freshman will get a jump-start on college with William Woods University’s college preparation program, Freshman Advantage, June 13-July 1. Freshman Advantage has offered students the opportunity to get adjusted to college during a three-week, on-campus program for the last 12 years.

Students can earn up to seven general education credits in courses such as math, college writing, art, film studies, speech, world religions, Deaf culture, human diseases and psychology.

Designed to aid students in the transition from high school to college, Freshman Advantage is directed and taught by WWU faculty members. Student mentors assist participants by tutoring, leading weekend activities and serving as community advisers in the residence halls. Freshman Advantage faculty select the mentors through an application and interview process.

“This year will be my first time being a mentor for Freshman Advantage and I am extremely happy to welcome new students to their new home,” Pinkham said. “Overall it is a great program where incoming freshmen will be able to know their way around campus, be able to know people before the fall semester starts, and get some courses under their belt before they come to college. I just finished my first year at William Woods University, and I am excited to help share with the incoming freshmen that William Woods is not only a great college to get your education at, but to also make memorable experiences that will help them develop as a person.”

Earning credit hours during the summer is helpful for those students focused on academics, who want to double major, graduate early or simply want an introduction to college course work.

In addition to classes, Freshman Advantage participants will have the opportunity to enjoy activities such as movie nights, barbeques, and weekend trips to such places as Six Flags.

William Woods University is an independent, professions-oriented, liberal arts-based institution serving the educational needs of both men and women.
