For Tim Herrman, October 2 probably seemed like a typical fall day when he arrived at Midwest Superstore at 1100 East 30th Street in Hutchinson not knowing he would soon experience a life-threatening medical emergency. Nor did he know that two local citizens would step forward to perform CPR that may have saved his life.

Herrman was enjoying the day when he was stuck with Cardiac Arrest. Midwest Superstore staff promptly summoned 911, but there is even more to this story. Britnea Weaver, a nurse with the Hutchinson Clinic was at the business and Greg Flores, an employee of Midwest Superstore, stepped forward to perform CPR. Soon, EMS personnel were on the scene and Herrman was transported to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was treated and made a full recovery.

David Trotter, Deputy Chief for Reno County EMS, said thanks to the quick response from Weaver and Flores, along with the Hutchinson Fire Department and Reno County EMS, Tim Herrman is alive today. “The CPR provided by these two citizen responders was instrumental in the successful resuscitation of Mr.  Herrman,” Trotter said. “Crucial to cardiac arrest survival is the immediate recognition of the situation and the application of effective CPR.”

“This event demonstrates the need for citizens to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques and demonstrates how they can dramatically impact the lives of cardiac arrest victims,” Trotter continued.

Weaver and Flores will receive the Citizen Lifesaving Award presented by Reno County EMS and the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in a ceremony planned for 1 p.m. Thursday, December 2 at Midwest Superstore.

Trotter said the EMS crew that responded that day along with the Hutchinson Fire Department have been invited to attend if schedules permit.
