Wichita Police Department Awarded Silver: Third year for an award, first year a platinum

During the Wichita City Council Meeting today in Wichita, Jennifer Haugh, AAA Spokesperson presented Deputy Chief Seiler and Sergeant Krok with the 2015 AAA Kansas Community Traffic Safety SILVER Award.

The award is presented by AAA annually to encourage communities to address local traffic safety issues in a coordinated and cost-effective way and reward deserving departments.

Wichita Police Department was recognized for having a traffic safety committee comprised of representatives of various local organizations that meets bi-monthly to ID traffic safety problems and formulate solutions.

In the area of education, the Department was recognized for their traffic safety education work:  Mock DUI crash fatalities at area high schools; Halloween in the Park; Wichita PD Intranet; K-9 Education demonstrations & Railroad safety projects.

In the EMS category, they were recognized for the traffic incident management training they do

And in the area of Enforcement, they were recognized for the many special enforcement efforts they make:  Click It or Ticket – DUI Enforcement – IDDP – High Accident Location & Corridor Enforcements – Neighborhood Oriented Traffic Complaint & K-9 Interdictions .

Wichita PD is received a SILVER Award…for demonstrating STRONG, SUSTAINED efforts in addressing local traffic safety issues.

The statistics show the results of their efforts:

  • Adult Seat belt use has risen from 80 to 93% in five years
  • TEEN seat belt use has also risen, from 78 to 91% in five years;
  • Child Passenger Seat use has risen from 86 to 93% in five years;
  • Alcohol crashes have dropped from 481 to 377

The department is one of only 23 in Kansas to qualify for a 2015 AAA award.
