Kansas Summer Heat

Summer always brings fun and exciting events and many are gathering for outdoor activities.  Although these events and activities may be enjoyable, they can also be harmful due to the heat.  Excessive heat warnings are typical for this time of year. We should all be very aware of the dangers the high temperatures can trigger if we don’t take precautions.  Drink plenty of water  to keep hydrated, stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible, check on friends and neighbors who live alone and have others check on you, try to avoid using the stove or oven to cook, wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and don’t forget your sunscreen.  Fans should not be your primary source of cooling in extreme heat.  A cool bath or shower can help if you are feeling overheated.  Staying tuned to local news for weather, and safety updates may help prepare for these grueling temperatures.  We should closely monitor people who are dependent upon others for care such as children, people aged 65 or older and people with chronic medical conditions as they may be less likely to sense and respond to changes in temperature.  Outdoor workers and athletes should also take more precautions.    If you or someone you know is experiencing muscle cramps, headaches, nausea or vomiting as a result of heat, seek medical care immediately.  Be smart and have a safe, enjoyable summer.
