Hello, Harvey County! I joined K-State Research & Extension – Harvey County as the Nutrition, Food Safety and Health Agent in April. For the past couple of months, I have been busy making connections with groups, businesses, and people in Newton and surrounding communities of Harvey County. Our Spring health program, Walk Kansas, just wrapped up at the end of May as well. In case you missed it, Walk Kansas is a team-based, 8-week program focused on increasing physical activity, making better eating choices and reducing stress.

I come to KSRE with over 16 years of experience working as a Registered Dietitian in clinical nutrition and community health fields. I grew up in rural NW Butler County and moved back to the area several years ago. Newton has been a big part of my family’s lives where we shop, eat, and play, and I look forward to bringing a wide range of programming topics to our community.

One program that I am looking forward to teaching this fall is Stay Strong, Stay Healthy. This evidenced-based strength training program is designed to meet the fitness needs of older adults and middle-aged, sedentary adults. The hour-long class meets twice each week for a consecutive 8 weeks. As a trained and certified instructor, I will lead participants in warm-up activities, strength exercises – with or without weights- and cool-down activities. Research has shown that this program prevents frailty, injury and disease; improving the quality of life for older adults by increasing independence and productive living.

As the front door to Kansas State University, Extension Agents bring research-based educational programs to help Kansans improve their lives, livelihoods, businesses, and communities.  Besides providing various classes like Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, I provide numerous educational resources through in-person instruction and demonstrations, media, and printed material. A few examples of presentation topics that are available for community groups are food safety, food preservation, and healthy eating on a budget. Senior Medicare Counseling for Kansans (SHICK) is another program offered to residents of Harvey County. Just last year our SHICK volunteers saved residents a total of $216,134.24. We also provide free pressure canner gauge testing to Harvey County residents at the Extension office.

If any of these programs or topics interest you, please feel free to contact me at the Extension office by calling 316-284-6930. More information on our services, classes, and resources can be found on our website (www.harvey.k-state.edu).
