LAWRENCE — A large searchlight will shine above the University of Kansas campus from 8 to 11 p.m. Thursday, April 23, as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“Light the Night” serves to create awareness about sexual violence and the resources available to combat it. Along with the spotlight, KU staff will provide a confidential and accessible space in Danforth Chapel for people seeking support.

“We are honored to provide this safe space,” said Chris Sowa, assistant director for KU Student Housing. “As an institution of higher learning, we have a responsibility to foster dialogue and respond to these issues. We also must provide resources that survivors of sexual violence can access.”

“April provides a focused moment in time to bring awareness to all forms of sexual violence. However, the challenge before us is to transform awareness into action every day of every month,” said Sarah Jane Russell, CARE coordinator.

Another highlight includes a screening of the movie “Hunting Ground” at 7 p.m. April 28 in Woodruff Auditorium at the Kansas Memorial Union. Other events are listed here.

If you are in need of an accommodation due to a disability, please submit your request in advance of these events to Chris Sowa, assistant director for KU Student Housing at [email protected] or 785-864-7220. TTY:711
