Asparagus Production Up 20 Percent from 2015 Strawberry Production Down 7 Percent from 2015 Onion Production Up 8 Percent from 2015 Contracted Processing Production Down 7 Percent from 2015

Production of the 2016 asparagus crop is forecast at 821,000 cwt, up 20 percent from 2015. Area harvested, at 23,000 acres, is down 2 percent from last year.

Strawberry production in the United States is forecast at 28.9 million cwt, down 7 percent from 2015. Area harvested, at 53,300 acres, is down 8 percent from last year. Strawberry yield is forecast at 541 cwt per acre, up 9 cwt from 2015.

Production of the 2016 onion crop is forecast at 73.0 million cwt, up 8 percent from 2015. Onion growers expect to harvest 134,100 acres in 2016, up

1 percent from last year. The average yield, at 544 cwt per acre, is 37 cwt above 2015.

The 2016 contracted processing vegetable production for the four major processing crops (snap beans, sweet corn, green peas, and tomatoes) is forecast at 17.0 million tons, down 7 percent from last year. Production of processing tomatoes, at 13.3 million tons, is down 9 percent from last year.

Snap bean production, at 748,280 tons, is up 1 percent from last year’s production. Sweet corn production, at 2.56 million tons, is up 7 percent from last year. Green pea production, at 314,880 tons, is down 23 percent from the previous year. Contracted area for harvest of the four major processing vegetable crops, at 870,260 acres, is 6 percent below 2015.
