Presented by author and professor Kimberly Schmidt

Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 3:00-5:00

At MCC Center, 121 E. 30th Street, North Newton, KS

Kimberly Schmidt, professor of history at Eastern Mennonite University, will be in Kansas by invitation of the StoryTellers of the Great Plains to lead a workshop on methods she has used in her own writing research.  Cheyenne Chief Lawrence Hart requested Schmidt write a women’s history of the Southern Cheyenne, so she set out to research the times of the 1868 massacre of many native Americans including Peace Chief Black Kettle.

Schmidt will report on her book, Magpie’s Blanket to writers meeting Thursday afternoon 3:00-5:00 at the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Offices in North Newton, Kansas.  The novel Magpie’s Blanket follows the journey of a young Southern Cheyenne woman who after surviving tremendous violence and bloodshed, seeks healing for herself and her people.

Kim recently received the 2017 WILLA (Women Writing the West) Literary Award for historical fiction, for literature for women’s or girls’ stories set in the American West.

Her publications include “Strangers at Home: Amish and Mennonite Women in History” from the Johns Hopkins University Press and other articles.

Come learn from and with other writers this October afternoon.  Early bird cost for attending this event is $20 sent to Barb Orsi, 7217 E. Oxford St., Wichita KS 67226 or PayPal.me/barborsi or $25 at the door.  Check the StoryTellers of the Great Plains website, www.writinglink.org for more information or connect on Facebook.
