Hutchinson, Kan. – Prepare Ye! Stage 9 announces that auditions for Godspell (2012 Revised Version) will be Saturday, July 8th from 10:00 – 2:00. Stage 9 is located at 9 S. Main, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Godspell (2012 Revised Version) is the dramatic retelling of the Gospel story with a twist, this time it is located on a playground. In Godspell (2012 Revised Version), the audience will find themselves drawn into the Gospel of Matthew as this ensemble of singer/ movers start to create a community together. Each from different walks of life, containing their own stories, come together in the end to build a “Beautiful city”.

Godspell (2012 Revised Version) is a powerful musical and testament to what can happen when a group of people bond together as an ensemble. With many well-known tunes from the original such as “Day by Day”, “All Good Gifts”, and “Prepare Ye!”, Godspell(2012 Revised Version) is sure to enthuse and delight Stage 9 audiences night after night. This small company will help Jesus tell different parables from the bible in many different ways with multiple storytelling techniques, games, and is sure to be loaded with plenty of comedic timing.

Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden); and since its debut has taken the world by storm with the original production, this revised edition, and the major motion picture. Originally conceived in 1970 as John-Michael Tebelak’s Master’s Thesis, Stage 9 offers the 2012 revised Broadway version of Godspell which has been updated so that musical numbers have a distinctively modern sound. Stage 9 is happy to be one of the first companies in the area to tackle this new version.

Auditions will take place on Saturday, July 8th, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interested actors who cannot attend the auditions during these times, please contact Producing Artistic Director, Charles Johnston, for alternate arrangements. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script provided at the auditions, a vocal selection of your choice, and a dance portion. All interested actors should bring their schedules and conflicts to let the director know when they are available to rehearse. If actors have previous acting experience, they may choose to bring a headshot, resume and/or experiences to share with the director.

Stage 9 will be auditioning for 5 men and 5 women who will play many different roles in the ensemble.

Jesus

Must be the most charismatic individual in the cast. High energy, charming, funny, gentle but with strength. He is the sort of person others instinctively follow.

John the Baptist/Judas

He has attributes of both Biblical figures: He is both Jesus’ lieutenant and most ardent disciple and the doubter who begins to question and rebel. Like Jesus, he is also charismatic, but in more of an overt revolutionary way. Usually played by someone handsome and masculine, with an undertone of sexuality. He is the most “serious” and intellectual of the group, though as with all the actors, he must still possess a good sense of physical comedy.

Male Ensemble Member #1

Very high energy. Impish and playful. He sings “We Beseech Thee”.

Male Ensemble Member #2

Not the brightest in the bunch, he is a little slow on the uptake. But there is a great sweetness and innocence about him. Because he sings “All Good Gifts” he must be a very good singer.

Male Ensemble Member #3

The comedian, the class clown. The guy who can do a hundred voices and imitations. He sings “Light of the World”.

Female Ensemble Member #1

A bit of a tomboy, but basically open and sweet. Perhaps the youngest of the group. She is the first of the group to commit to following Jesus in the song “Day by Day.”

Female Ensemble Member #2

The confident one, the show-off. The first one to volunteer, sometimes she jumps in before she really understands what’s going on. She sings “Bless the Lord”.

Female Ensemble Member #3

The shy one. Sometimes a little slow to get things, but when she does, she commits all the way. Has an “earth mother” kind of warmth to her. She sings “By My Side”.

Female Ensemble Member #4

Sassy and slightly cynical, the most urban of the group. Also the “sexy” one, but her sexiness contains a large element of put-on, in the manner of Mae West or Madonna (who in fact once played this role.) She sings “Turn Back, O Man”.

Female Ensemble Member #5

The female equivalent of the class clown. Goofy and a cut-up. She sings “Learn Your Lesson Well”

A cast list will be posted online, on Facebook and at Stage 9 on Wednesday, July 12, no later than 12 noon. Rehearsal will commence shortly after auditions, at a time and place to be announced.
