PRATT – On May 20, Maxwell Wildlife Refuge visitors may feel like they’re stepping onto the set of an American western movie, but the sights and sounds they’ll encounter will all be real. Members of the American Mountain Man Association will be hosting a demonstration at the refuge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving visitors an up-close look at what life was like pre-1840s for a mountain man doing “camp chores.” The event will be held at the refuge’s tour center, 2565 Pueblo Rd, Canton.

Mountain men from Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri will be showing onlookers how to pack horses, trap beaver, make powder horns, hand sew shirts, create rawhide and parfleche work, use Indian sign language, and more. There is no cost for admission.

In addition to the demonstrations, prairie tours will also be offered by The Friends of Maxwell group at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Reservations are required for the tours.
