EAGLE, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife has authorized an emergency fish salvage at Sylvan Lake State Park, lifting bag limits for all species in the reservoir beginning Sept. 1, until further notice.

A spawning closure will remain in place from the reservoir’s inlet to a half-mile upstream between Sept. 1 – Nov. 30. Anglers are prohibited from fishing in this area until Dec. 1 to protect spawning brown and brook trout.

Next spring, CPW will drain the lake almost entirely as work on a major construction project to repair and upgrade the lake’s dam begins.

“We are working to maintain a conservation pool for fish, but it is unlikely that the lake will be able to sustain all fish throughout the project,” said Park Manager Mike Wall. “Therefore, we have relaxed the bag limit and encourage anglers to participate in this fish salvage.”

Wall reminds anglers the salvage applies to Sylvan Lake only. All usual regulations and limits will remain in place across the state, unless otherwise posted. Only legal methods of take are allowed.  Anglers over the age of 16 must have a valid license. Park visitors must have a valid pass to enter the park.

Sylvan Lake State Park is popular with anglers year round, providing excellent ice fishing opportunities during winter. Species found in Sylvan Lake include stocked rainbow and Snake River cutthroat trout, along with wild brown and brook trout.
