Larry Oliver McCowan, 84, passed away September 2, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born August 26, 1937, in Cassville, MO, son of Oliver William and Alta Mae (Ziebell) McCowan.
Larry graduated from Wichita West High School in 1955. He then entered the Navy as an airplane mechanic, until his honorable discharge in 1958. Larry was employed as a truck driver for Dillons, retiring with 26 years of service and earning multiple safety certificates. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 795. Larry enjoyed carpentry, traveling throughout the United States and Canada with his family, volunteering for numerous charity organizations, and serving on hot-air balloon chase crews. He was a charter member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church and a former member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, serving as Temporal Affairs Elder.
Larry is described by family and friends as a timeless classic who showed love and support through his deeds, rather than just his words.
On July 3, 1965, he married Linda M. Ward, at First Presbyterian Church, in Great Bend. They shared 56 years of marriage.
Larry is survived by: wife, Linda M. McCowan; children, Karen D. Phillips, and Randall C. McCowan; grandchildren, Alexandria D. (Donnie Jr.) Patterson, Austin R.C. Phillips, and Mason O.W. Phillips; great-granddaughter, Chevelle; siblings, Glenn (Dolores) McCowan, Patricia G. (Charles) Leniger, and Elayna J. McCowan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Lois M. Worl and Jean E. Brewer.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 700 E. 25th Avenue, Hutchinson, with Pastor Craig Waetke officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at the church, with the family present.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hutchinson Meals on Wheels, New Covenant Presbyterian Church, or The Food Bank of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
