The Barton Community College women’s basketball team nearly pulled off the upset in the opening night of the Best Western Booster Club Classic Thanksgiving Classic as the Lady Cougars fell 65-60 to nationally receiving votes Iowa Western Community College 65-60 Friday night at the Barton Gym. With the game tied at 60 with thirty-three seconds on the clock, the Lady Reivers’ Tantashea Giger knocked a trey with eight seconds remaining to break a 60-all tie, then following a Barton turnover, Giger stuck the final dagger in the Lady Cougars sinking two free throws with two seconds remaining. The loss snaps Barton six game win streak falling to 7-3 on the season while Iowa Western improves to 6-2. The Lady Cougars will be back on the floor Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. game against Otero Junior College while the Lady Reivers will play at 1:00 p.m. against Cloud County Community College.
In the earlier women’s game of the Classic, the Cloud County ran away from Otero from the opening tip cruising to a 93-52 victory.
