Rally falls short as Cougars’ season comes to an end to Coffeyville

Despite a late second half rally, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team suffered one of the worst shooting nights of the season Thursday night at the Barton Gym spelling doom as Coffeyville Community College held on for a 66-63 victory.   The loss ends the No. 6 seeded Cougars’ season at 18-13 while the No. 11 seeded Ravens improves to 16-15 advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Region VI tournament.

The Cougars matched season lows in field goals made with just eighteen and had its second most frigid nights shooting just 32.7%.  The free throw line wasn’t friendly to the Cougars either going 20-of-31 (64.5%), below their 67.4% season percentage, including many misses on front ends of the bonus or 1-of-2 trips to the line.  Meanwhile Coffeyville shot better from long range (44%) than inside the arc (40%), burying 11-of-25 three-pointers on the night including eight in the first half to outscore Barton by twelve.

Tyrone Acuff came off the bench to join freshman Ezekiel Charles leading the Cougars in scoring with thirteen points as Charles also led the team with four assists.   Like Acuff, Derek Dorn also concluded his Barton career Thursday night finishing with ten points.  Fellow sophomore Dequandre Dentmond‘s last game as Cougar produced five points while helping Barton to a six rebound edge grabbing a game high ten boards.  

Three Ravens also hit the double-figure mark led by Delano Spencer’s eighteen points, fifteen coming from beyond the arc on 5-of-7 shooting, while also leading the team with seven rebounds.  University of Oklahoma signee Darrion Strong was 3-of-8 beyond the arc finishing with fifteen points and dishing out a team high four assists.  Jordan Taylor rounded out the double-digit scoring with twelve points.
