Newton donates $12,500

Newton’s City Commission gave $12,500 to support a grant to keep the current Amtrak Southwest Chief.  The Southwest Chief stops in Newton every morning on its run between Chicago and Los Angeles. Last year there were 12,870 arrivals and departures from Newton. The current problem is an aging track between Newton and Raton, NM, which led Amtrak to consider bypassing western Kansas.
