Buhler fundraiser will have Carribean theme

Sunshine Meadows, a retirement community in Buhler, will be holding a fundraising gala on April 10.

Grand Staff Ministries, Inc. is hosting their 8th annual Silent & Live Auction and free Banquet: Swaziland’s Heartbeat of Hope: “There’s No Place Like Home.”

Because Swaziland, Africa, has the highest incidence of AIDS in the world, most of the children there never experience the joys home is designed to provide.  They  are raising funds to build their first orphan home in this country, and you are invited to attend the auction.

D-Day with the Big Red One

ABILENE, Kan. –  The public is invited to a brown bag lunch presentation on March 25 at noon in the Visitors Center Auditorium of the Eisenhower Presidential Library.

 

John McManus will discuss D-Day with the Big Red One. McManus will focus on several key individuals who were instrumental in the division’s victory at Omaha beach.

 

McManus is an award-winning professor, author and military historian. He is currently Curators’ Professor of U.S. Military History at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). A St. Louis native, McManus earned an M.A. in American history from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D. in American history and military history from the University of Tennessee. He is the author of 11 books and served as historical advisor for the bestselling book and documentary Salinger, the latter of which appeared nationwide in theaters and on PBS’s American Masters Series.

 

Copies of McManus’s most recent book will be available for sale in the gift shop for signing following the brown bag discussion.

McPherson County announces ‘All School Day’ chair

McPherson County’s “All School Day,” a tradition that goes back more than a century, will be May 8. The celebration includes a week-long carnival and a 10:30 a.m. parade that day.

This year’s chair for the event is Nick Gosnell, news and sports director at McPherson radio stations KNGL and KBBE.

Looking to advance to the NJCAA Tournament Final Four for the fourth consecutive season, the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team will receive a stern test from No. 3 Northwest Florida State.

The 34-0 Blue Dragons will meet the 28-4 Raiders in the first of four quarterfinal games at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Salina’s Bicentennial Center.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) beginning at 12:50 p.m. The game will also be streamed live by NJCAATV.com also beginning at 12:50 p.m.
