Local author to discuss new book at Eisenhower Presidential Library

0

ABILENE, Kan. – Local author Marilyn Holt will discuss her latest book on November 6 at the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home. The program begins at 7 p.m. in the Visitors Center Auditorium.

Today we take it for granted that political leaders and presidential administrations will address issues related to children and teenagers. But in the not-so-distant past, politicians had little to say and federal programs less to do with children. Holt’s book, Cold War Kids: Politics and Childhood in Postwar America, 1945-1960, shows how the Cold War changed all that. Against the backdrop of the postwar baby boom and the rise of a distinct teen culture, Cold War Kids unfolds the little-known story of how politics and federal policy expanded their influence in shaping children’s lives and experiences.

Copies of the book are available for purchase in the Presidential Gift Shop and a book signing will follow the program.

Holt is an independent historian who consults on Kansas history. She is the former director of publications at the Kansas Historical Society and has served as a research consultant for the PBS American Experience series. Some of her previous books include The Orphan Trains: Placing Out in America and Mamie Doud Eisenhower: The General’s First Lady.

Going on the road for a first round Region VI playoff game is something the Barton Community College men’s soccer program has never experienced.  Thursday at Dodge City’s Memorial Stadium the sixth seeded Cougars looked comfortable enough away from friendly home turf to upset third seeded Dodge City Community College 3-2 in overtime.  The victory improves Barton to 7-5-3 on the season while ending Dodge City’s season at 11-5-2.  Next up for the Cougars will be a Sunday road trip to Coffeyville Community College in the Region VI Semifinals as the second seeded Ravens dispatched seventh seeded Johnson County Community College 4-2.   The Ravens, 12-4-2 on the season, defeated Barton 5-2 back on September 17 in Coffeyville.

Dodge City struck first nineteen minutes into the contest as the Cougars were unable to clear a Mauro Hipolito pass through the box allowing Ben Carter to finish it off giving the Conquistadors the early lead.

Sixteen minutes later Renan Sousa tied the contest fielding a long throw in from Garrett Pulliam and one-timed it to the top 90.  Less than two minutes later the freshman from Brazil gave Barton the lead leaping high in the air to head in a Jiro Barriga Toyama cross.

Looking to carry the one goal advantage into halftime, the Cougars fell victim to a penalty in the box for the third straight game as the Cougars were whistled for the call with a mere 45 seconds on the clock.  Dodge City’s Adrian Torres made Barton pay and the teams went to intermission in a deadlocked two-all tie.

Despite being outshot in the second frame, goalkeeper Austin Kail and the Cougar defense kept the season alive turning back four shots on goal.

Barton became the aggressor once again in overtime launching four narrow miss shots including one striking the post.  Appearing headed for a second golden goal period, Christopher Hogg put the dagger in the Conquistadors’ season with thirty-three seconds remaining.   Receiving a Matt Sherrod pass just inside the 18′ the sophomore from Scotland threaded two defenders finding the far post beyond the diving Conquistador goalkeeper Alex Rodela to record his second game winning goal of the season.

With only 38 seconds on the clock Halstead High coach Grider trusted tailback Blake Beckett and his offensive line to take care of business.  And that precisely what they did.  Blake ground out a 7-yard game-winning touchdown with two would be tacklers along for the ride. The touchdown capped a 78 yard drive and secured the victory and a District 11 championship.

Halstead (7-2, 2-1) plays Southeast of Saline (7-2) at home Tuesday.

Trinity Catholic (8-1, 2-1) finishes as District 11 runner-up and will face Hesston (9-0) Tuesday.

Both teams qualified for the playoffs with a little help from Garden Plain who stunned Kingman 24-0 just one week after losing 58-0 to Halstead.
