GRANDMOTHER’S CHENILLE BEDSPREAD

My maternal grandmother had a beautiful chenille bedspread that she was very protective of. NO ONE sat on it or got near it. Well, almost no one. I did see Grandfather sitting on the edge of the bed a couple of times when he was putting on his socks or shoes. But he was the only one allowed to touch it.

The chenille spread she had was white and I am afraid it would have been dirty all the time if she had allowed me to get on it. But my shiny black shoes with the buckles on the strap were not allowed near the bed. Once in awhile I would take them off and climb up there and sit in the middle of her bed. Talk about tempting fate!

When she caught me and she always did, she would tell me that I must be sleepy if I was on her bed and she would put me to bed in the other bedroom I always slept on. It always crushed me when she scolded me about getting on her bed or anything I knew I wasn’t supposed to do.

I have Grandmother’s chenille bedspread but it isn’t big enough for my queen but I would be afraid to use it anyway. I would be afraid I would be in trouble if I sat on the edge of the bed even though she has been gone for a long time.

A few years ago I lost my mind and decided to do a candlewick bedspread for the queen bed. It is more like a quilt because it needs a dust ruffle but it is still pretty big. It is off white and the design has a large flower in the middle with flowers and leaf patterns around the edge of the top and down the sides.

I only put the bedspread I made on the bed for the summer months because it is not warm enough for winter. But when it is on the bed it is hard to keep it clean and it does wrinkle when someone sits on it. I don’t sit on the bed when the candlewick spread is on it.

I can’t imagine what I would be like if we had little kids around and it was on the bed. I would probably be as bad as Grandmother was with her chenille spread. But I am lucky that my bedspread is on a bed that is in the back of the house and not out where everyone can see it.

Grandmothers’ bed was visible from the front door. It was in the room to the south of the living room and probably was not meant to be a bedroom but a dining room because the kitchen sat to the west through an open door. It had a large arch between that room and living room so everything in her bedroom could be seen all the time.

So her beautiful chenille spread was out for everyone to see and all the grandkids to get in trouble for sitting on it. We learned very young that it was not the thing to do and stayed away from her bed. Well, most of them did but I would tempt fate now and then and always with the same result.

When I got stupid and decided to sit on her bed I ended up in a time out. I didn’t want to miss much time with Grandmother so I usually was pretty good and stayed off her bed. When she caught me on her bed with my black patent shoes with the buckle strap I was in big trouble. She would take me off her bed and always said, “Well, I guess you must be sleepy if you are on my bed so it is time for you to take a nap.”

I ended up in the other bedroom on that bed to take a nap more times than I can count because her chenille spread and her bed were so inviting.

I can remember getting to lay between Grandma and Grandpa for a while when it was bedtime. But, I didn’t get to lay with them as often as I would have liked to. That was an exciting few minutes and I probably drove them crazy talking and wiggling. All too soon I had to go to the other bedroom and climb into that bed for the night.

So now it has come full circle and if I had Grandkids they would be banned from sitting on my candlewick bedspread or they would have to go to the other room and take a nap. Even though most kids today don’t wear the little patent shoes with the buckle strap that caused so much damage to Grandmother’s Chenille bedspread they would not be allowed on my bedspread. I would not want it to get dirty from their shoes and whatever they might have on their hands. To contact Sandy: [email protected].
